The Role:
The post-holder will be a key member of the specialist nursing team within the fertility clinic, providing expert care and support across a range of advanced reproductive treatments. These treatments include IVF, ICSI, Ovulation Induction, Egg Donation and Sharing, Egg Recipiency, and Surgical Sperm Retrieval. As a Senior Nurse, you will support the nursing staff, oversee clinical procedures, and collaborate closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality patient care and treatment outcomes.

This role is permanent part time working 30 hours per week - weekends on rotation are required 

The Location:
Wessex Fertility was established in 1992 and is one of the UK’s longest standing IVF clinics. Due to the passion, expertise and reputation of our team, the clinic has grown into a leading fertility clinic and offers a full suite of treatment and diagnostic services, specialising PGT and surrogacy. Providing treatment to both NHS and private patients, Wessex Fertility performs approximately 500 fresh cycles and 500 frozen cycles per year. Conveniently located to the East of Southampton, a short distance from junction 7 of the M27, there is ample free parking for staff and patients around the building. Wessex Fertility also has a 5/5 inspection rating from the HFEA and excellent patient review scores

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Practice

  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to patients undergoing Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) treatments, including IVF, ICSI, IUI, and donor insemination.

  • Plan and coordinate treatment cycles, including investigations (e.g. endocrine profiles), drug prescribing, and patient scheduling.

  • Provide expert consultations before, during, and after treatment, ensuring informed consent and compliance with HFEA regulations.

  • Offer empathetic support and implications counselling to patients and partners, including during sensitive or distressing situations such as treatment failure, miscarriage, or bereavement.

  • Maintain accurate and detailed clinical documentation in line with NMC and HFEA requirements.

  • Prepare and assist with clinical procedures such as oocyte retrieval, embryo transfer, and intrauterine insemination, ensuring the highest

    standards of sterility and patient safety.

  • Perform venipuncture to collect blood samples for diagnostic testing, ensuring accurate and safe technique in line with clinical protocols.

  • Educate patients on treatment protocols, medication use, and self-administration of injections.

  • Monitor patients’ clinical progress, interpret complex data, anticipate potential complications, and take prompt action in line with clinical protocols.

Leadership & Team Support

  • Promote and uphold the unit’s philosophy of holistic, patient-centred fertility care.

  • Provide clinical advice, mentorship, and supervision to nursing colleagues and members of the multidisciplinary team.

  • Manage challenging or emergency situations calmly and competently, supporting patients, relatives, and staff.

  • Foster effective communication and teamwork, resolving conflict promptly and professionally.

  • Ensure adherence to COSHH, Infection Control, and Health & Safety standards within the clinical environment.

  • Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure accurate, legible record-keeping in accordance with organisational and HFEA policy.

Education, Research & Quality Improvement

  • Participate in audits, research projects, and continuous quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.

  • Support and contribute to local, national, and international fertility research studies.

  • Engage in ongoing professional development, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of ART, women’s health, and evidence-based practice.

  • Utilise competency frameworks, reflective practice, and supervision to continuously improve clinical skills and professional growth.

  • Ongoing training will encompass advanced skills, including performing intrauterine inseminations (IUIs), conducting ultrasound scans, and assisting with embryo transfers.

  • Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and within the scope of professional practice at all times.

  • Uphold the highest standards of confidentiality, patient safety, and ethical practice.

Job requirements

Experience:

  • Registered Nurse (1st Level) with NMC registration.

  • Interest and experience in Women’s Health

  • Computer skills

  • Phlebotomy

  • Theatre and recovery

  • 2 years' experience in a fertility clinic (desirable but not essential)

  • Basic Ultrasound skills (desirable but not essential)

  • Good communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly to patients

  • Team player with a professional, compassionate, and flexible approach

  • Highly professional with a diplomatic and patient-focused attitude.

  • Adaptable and innovative, with the ability to manage challenging situations effectively.

  • Commitment to professional development, both for yourself and others.

Salary: Competitive (Depending on experience)

Working Hours: 30 hours per week

Weekends required at 1:4

Pension: Dual contribution pension scheme

Holiday Entitlement: 27 Days + Bank holidays (pro rata)
